There is always something special about this time of year. The NBA playoffs are in full swing, the Kentucky Derby is right around the corner, and now to add the sanguine nature of early May in the world of sports, we have college QB's getting booted for not-so-sportsman-like conduct.

The Pistons came out and put the '6ers away last night with an impressive win. I must admit that I had my doubts about their legitimance when it came to having a shot at this series. The last two games they played against Philly in the regular season weren't exactly their shining moments, and they went down a game early. But luckily for them, they're a resilient bunch. They came and proved that they are still some of the best frontmen in the Eastern Conference. But then again....the 76ers will always be the 76ers.

And like I predicted, the Suns got embarrased out of the playoffs by the Spurs with their impish lack of defense on the pick n'roll. While it was amusing to watch Shaq lope around the court and weedle around like he didn't know what he was doing, it was still sad to watch veterans like Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire get bounced out like a stray ball. I don't think Shaq is nearly what he was cracked up to be.

I was rather disappointed to hear that Ryan Perrilloux got booted from the team roster due to the failure of some drug tests. Even if this wasn't his first offense, it is always a sad day when a young guy with some talent and promise decides to take that chance. The fact of the matter is, it will always come back to bite you in the butt.

I had an afternoon of enjoyment while watching the Kentucky Oaks, ladies day at Churchill Downs, and the prelude to the greatest two minutes in racing. I won myself a nice exacta on the Oaks with Proud Spell and Little Belle, and I'm feeling lucky! So here we go....I'm picking Big Brown for the winner of the Roses. And maybe a little bit of Eight Belles for a nice exacta. Whaddya think?

....not Junior.

*laughs butt off*

In other sporting world news:

Major props to the Phoenix Suns for finding a little bit of defense and managing to win at least one game against the Spurs. For that they won't look like total losers when they get sent packing in Game 5.

Congratulations to Jake Long for being the first pick in the draft. However, if you really think about it, he wasn't all that lucky.

I bet Aaron Rodgers day really sucked when he found out the Packers were drafting a QB. I hope he loses the starting job. I never really like the guy, not to mention he has a bit of a consistency problem. But no matter who starts, lets face it....nobody is going to equal Favre, the Great Gunslinger of Green Bay.

So this week the NASCAR circuit has woven its way back to Talladega. So this is like....what? The Mardi Gras of the NASCAR season? The stomping grounds of some of the most dedicated of fans? Home to the former glory of a man named Earnhardt?  Or could it have more to do with the current generation....the days when Earnhardt Jr. would stomp the competition. Or maybe even more with the Hendrick dominance that has snatched the familarity of Victory Lane away from the sports MPD?

This weekend on April 27, this man named Earnhardt Jr. will make his 300th career start at what is arguably his best track. Only now he has crossed over enemy lines and adhered to the age old adage, "If you can't lick 'em, join 'em." Will this change succeed in finally returning Junior to Victory Lane not only at Talladega, but over all? It has been almost two full seasons since he has won a race, and six races at Talladega since he has seen this VL. The media is pumping this up to be Dale's race. Now, I may not be an Earnhardt fanatic, but I have to admit that it isn't something I would hate to see. But at the same time, I am going to laugh my butt off if he comes in second and every member of the media and every hammered fan in the stadium wilts away from the despair.

What will Sunday hold? Only the racing god's know. Keep your fingers crossed the Earnhardt Sr. is one of them.
